Burmese ethnic leader Dr. Lian Hmung Sakhong has been awarded the 2007 Martin Luther King Prize by Swedish global peace groups for his contribution to the Burmese democracy movement and the struggle for equal rights for the non-Burman ethnic groups.
Dr. Lian Hmung Sakhong, a Chin national, is the General Secretary of the Ethnic Nationalities Council and the United Nationalities league for Democracy - liberated area. He will receive the award in a ceremony at the Swedish parliament on 15 January, 2007. The prize giving ceremony will occur on the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King.
The prize includes a cash award of US $25,000, and a certificate of honor made by the committee. As a recipient, Dr. Sakhong will give a peace lecture entitled, "A Struggle to be an Authentic Human Being Again", during the official ceremony.
The Martin Luther King Prize was established in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for his historic efforts and contribution towards peace and harmony among human beings of all races. The Swedish based global peace groups include the Baptiste Union of Sweden, Christian Initiative for Peace (Peace Initiative), Christian Association for Combat to Racism, and the Afro-Swedish Association.
According to the awards committee, Dr. Sakhong is the third recipient of the Martin Luther King Prize since the award was first handed on the 15th of January, 2005.#
